Hundreds of followers of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro invaded the headquarters of the National Congress this Sunday in protests in which they demand a military intervention to overthrow President Lula da Silva, who took office as president on the 1st. The group, which defends thesis coup leaders, overcame a police barrier and climbed the ramp that gives access to the roof of the buildings of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

The area around the Congress had been cordoned off by the authorities, after the arrival of several buses with Bolsonaro supporters, but supporters of the former president, who refuse to accept Lula's victory in the elections last October, have managed to break through the security cordons. and several dozen of them have climbed the ramp of this modern building to occupy the roof.

The protesters have managed to enter the building, according to what Senator Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, interim president of the Senate, told CNN Brazil.

The police have used tear gas canisters to try to disperse the Bolsonaristas.

The extremists, mostly wearing yellow and green shirts and Brazilian flags, have also attacked some vehicles of the Legislative Police, which provides security for Congress.

They have also destroyed protection barriers and, armed with sticks, they confronted the agents who tried, without success, to contain the entry of the Bolsonaristas.

Hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters have been camped out in front of the Army Headquarters, in Brasilia, since the day after the elections on October 30, the second round in which Lula defeated Bolsonaro, with 50.9% of the vote. compared to 49.1%.

The camps of the radical Bolsonaristas, which have multiplied in cities throughout the country, began to be dismantled on Friday in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, where some disturbances occurred.

On Saturday, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, authorized the action of the National Security Force, an elite group of police forces from all over the country, which is mobilized for special missions.

Before the events of this Sunday, Dino spoke on social networks and said that opponents will have to wait until 2026, when the next presidential elections are held.
