The Japanese authorities announced today that the city of Aomori in northeastern Japan has begun research to generate electricity from snow, with the aim of securing a renewable energy source to cover the potential shortage.

And the Japanese Kyodo News Agency stated that the city of Aomori, which witnesses heavy snow every year, began an experiment in the swimming pool of an abandoned elementary school to explore the feasibility of producing energy by taking advantage of the temperature difference between the stored snow and the surrounding air.

Japanese companies specialized in the field of information technology, in partnership with the University of Electrical Communications in Tokyo, are looking forward to operating a turbine with the energy produced when the liquid is cooled with stored ice and then evaporated by the heat of the surrounding air.

Electricity generation using stored snow has recently attracted attention as an environmentally friendly, low-cost and safe energy source.
