Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called the events in Brasilia "barbaric" and called pro-Bolsonaro protesters who stormed government buildings "fascist."

"These people are all that is abominable in politics, invading the seat of government, the seat of Congress and the seat of the Supreme Court like true vandals destroying everything in their path," said Lula da Silva.

Lula also said that there was a "lack of security" and stated that "all the people who did this will be found and punished."

Lula gave a press conference in Araraquara, Sao Paulo, where he had been inspecting areas damaged by heavy flooding.

On Twitter, this is what Lula da Silva said: "You will have seen today's barbarism in Brasilia. Those people we call fascists, the most abominable of politics, invaded the palace and Congress. We believe there was a lack of security.

"Whoever did this will be found and punished. Democracy guarantees the right to free expression, but it also demands that institutions be respected. There is no precedent in the country's history for what they have done today. That is why they must be punished .

"And we will find out who are the financiers of those who have gone to Brasilia today, and they will all pay with the force of the law."

Where is Bolsonaro?

After losing in the second round of the presidential elections in October, Jair Bolsonaro ended his presidency on January 1, the day Lula da Silva took office.

At the inauguration of Lula as president a week ago, the absence of the now former president Bolsonaro was notable, who since Friday, December 30, left Brazil for Florida, United States, where he is currently.

So far, Bolsonaro has not commented on the protests this Sunday in Brasilia.
