Today, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Congressional Building, the Supreme Court and the Planalto presidential palace, a week after the inauguration of Iñácio Lula da Silva as president.
And according to Agence France-Presse, "The demonstrators attacked the facilities of the main authority of the country in the capital, Brasilia, while the police tried to repel them by firing tear gas, but to no avail."
"This futile attempt to impose a will by force will not prevail and the government of the Federal District of Brasilia will send reinforcements to restore order," Minister of Justice and Public Security Flavio Dino said on Twitter.
Video clips posted on social media showed the broken offices of parliamentarians, demonstrators standing on Senate seats, and damage to these buildings, which are considered architectural masterpieces of a modern style and contain many works of art.
Supporters of Bolsonaro, who was defeated by Lula in the second round of the presidential elections on October 30, demonstrated in front of military barracks, demanding the intervention of the army to prevent Lula from assuming the presidency after he was sworn in before Congress last Sunday.
