Thousands of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have invaded the headquarters of Congress, the Presidency and the Supreme Court, in Brasilia, to demand a military intervention to remove Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from power, who took office on January 1 .

The assault in Brasilia is reminiscent of the one perpetrated on the United States Capitol two years ago, with the difference that the Brazilian Congress is not in session, it will only resume its activities in February.

The police regained control of the Supreme Court around 5:00 p.m. (local time).

However, the demonstrators continued in Congress and in the Planalto Palace, the seat of the Presidency.

Lula holds an emergency meeting with his main ministers

The president of Colombia and the foreign minister of Mexico also condemn the assault

The president of Colombia,

Gustavo Petro

, has also expressed his solidarity with his colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva through the social network Twitter.

"Fascism decides to launch a coup. The rights have not been able to maintain the non-violence pact," the president wrote in a message in which he urged the Organization of American States to hold an urgent meeting to discuss the situation.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, has also shown his support for Lula's government "elected by popular will" and has rejected "any attempt against democratic institutions" in Brazil. 

The pro tempore Presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has also expressed its support for the Lula government and has rejected "violent actions against Brazilian democratic institutions."

The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, calls for the "absolute rejection of the international community"

"We are together with the Brazilian people to defend democracy," wrote the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, who joined the general repudiation of the assault on the Brazilian Congress from his Twitter account.

"Democracy is the only political system that guarantees freedoms and obliges us to respect the popular verdict. Those who try to ignore the will of the majority, attempt against democracy and deserve not only the corresponding legal sanction, but also the absolute rejection of the international community", wrote the Argentine.

"I want to express my rejection of what is happening in Brasilia. My unconditional support and that of the Argentine people to @LulaOficial in the face of this coup attempt that he is facing," said Fernández.

The president added, as pro tempore president of Celac and a member of Mercosur, that both multilaterals must unite in the face of "this unacceptable anti-democratic reaction that is trying to impose itself in Brazil."
