The General Authority for Forest Management and Development in Hama governorate has allocated an area of 2,400 hectares to grow the spring potato crop during the current season.

The Director of Plant Wealth at the Authority, Engineer Wafiq Zarrouf, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that the potato is one of the agricultural crops that receives great demand from the farmers of the Al-Ghab region in its various spring, autumn or winter seasons, due to its relatively short production cycle, its good economic return, and the existence of a market for it. He indicated that the places for planting spring potatoes in Al-Ghab region are concentrated in the areas of Mahrada, Jub Ramla, Salhab and Al-Suqaylabiyah.

Zarouf pointed out that the spring potato seeds are available in the branch of the General Organization for Seed Multiplication in Hama, and all the requirements for this cultivation are available, especially with the presence of suitable soil, pointing out that the most prominent difficulties facing farmers during the spring planting season is the possibility of the potato crop being exposed to frost waves, which Negatively affects the quantity of production.

It is noteworthy that the last season witnessed the cultivation of about 1,200 hectares of the spring potato crop, in the lands of the Al-Ghab region, out of the total planned plan, which is 3,160 hectares.
