The bakery is the number one convenience store for the French, and in some villages it is even the last store still open.
The notion of “proximity” is interesting, it refers to geographical distance: 84% of French people live less than 2 kilometers from an artisanal bakery.
There are 33,000 in France.
But there is also the idea of relational proximity: 12 million customers visit their artisan bakery every day.
The bakery therefore remains the preferred trade of the French;
the bond of sympathy is strong and ancient.
