"Serious conflict of interest": a petition against the legal reform of Levin's opponent Israel today

2023-01-09T11:25:14.369Z

Members of the 'Fortress of Democracy' group appealed to the High Court of Justice to prevent Netanyahu and his government from promoting legal changes • They reject the claim that the current reform is in line with Levin's doctrine for years and is not related to the Netanyahu trial • According to the claim, the mere fact that Netanyahu made the appointment of the Minister of Justice becomes his plans without legitimacy

Following the announcement of Levin's legal reform:

members of the 'Fortress of Democracy' group today (Monday) appealed to the High Court of Justice with an urgent request for an interim injunction in the conflict of interest petition filed against Netanyahu demanding that the Prime Minister and his government be prevented from promoting any legislation related to the judicial system.

The petitioners claim that the government is not allowed to engage at all in matters of legislation in the field of the judicial system, the selection of judges and legal advice in the State of Israel.

This is due to the fear of a conflict of interest of the person who heads it, and this until the end of his term in office.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin presents his revolution in the judicial system

The group points out that the prime minister himself tells explicitly (as at the beginning of the cabinet meeting) about his active involvement in legislative initiatives in the field of the justice system and his intention to act to promote them.

All this while he is in a conflict of interest situation as a criminal defendant.

The petitioners referred to Levin's counter claim that he "aspires and is interested in promoting these legislative initiatives for many years and without connection to Netanyahu."

They claim that the fact that the Minister of Justice was appointed to his position by a criminal accused of serious crimes involving scandal is enough to prevent the advancement of all bills related to reforms in the judicial system.

Because of this, they are asking the court to issue an interim order preventing Netanyahu from advancing through the coalition headed by him any stage, even the most advanced, of legislative procedures concerning the powers of the judiciary, the composition of the committee for the selection of judges, the procedures involving the selection of judges and the powers of legal advice to the government, regardless of the content of the legislation This, and this until a final decision on the petition.

The urgent request for the interim order was submitted after last week the Minister of Justice announced his intention to carry out a coup d'état ("legal reform" as he calls it), through a series of initiatives, among them - changing the composition of the committee for the appointment of judges, enacting the enhancement clause, canceling the reason for reasonableness, and other steps that cannot be reversed From the serious conflict of interest situation in which the Prime Minister is accused of crimes.
