For 28 years his heart has been beating for the General German Bicycle Club, the ADFC.

Since then, the 64-year-old Mammendorfer Adi Stumper has been a member of Germany's largest traffic club for cyclists.

Since 2017 he has been co-head of the district association founded in 1985.

Fürstenfeldbruck – With Adi Stumper at the head of the ADFC district association are Bernd Burgmeier, Katrin Lehrack and Renate Wach.

"It may well be that many see me as the soul of the ADFC, which is a great honor for me, but the tasks are spread over many shoulders," emphasizes the 64-year-old.

"I'm probably only considered as such because I mainly keep appointments, which often take place during the day." Since he has taken early retirement, he has had the necessary time for this, in contrast to his working colleagues on the board, says Stumper.

Just drive around a bit

"Actually, I just wanted to ride a bit," says Stumper, about how he came to the ADFC almost three decades ago.

The enthusiastic cyclist had gained his first tour experience with the Mammendorf bicycle pilgrims when he had completed the Way of St. James with 40 cyclists.

The head of the ADFC Bruck at the time, Peter Dreisow, who died in 2013, then asked him whether he would like to lead tours.

"I led the first tour around 2000," recalls Stumper.

From 2003 he was a trained leader.

FFB newsletter.)

Stumper emphasizes that the ADFC's offerings focus on the joy of cycling.

In 2021, for example, there were 151 tours with almost 1000 participants, around a third of whom were non-members.

All of this needs to be scheduled and organized.

With the tours, the ADFC does its own advertising – and brings together people who enjoy cycling.

There is also help for members.

For example, Franz Fasching conducts safety training and the coding of bikes developed by the police.

make it safer

However, the main goal of the district association is to make cycling safer and more comfortable.

Stumper says: "We are completely neutral in terms of party politics, but of course we are partisan when it comes to bicycles in terms of transport policy.

We want to influence the legislation so that it becomes more bicycle-friendly and good cycle paths are built everywhere.

We are committed to the traffic turnaround with the focus on the bicycle.”

In the founding years, the ADFC representatives were considered rebels by authorities and committees.

“Meanwhile,” reports Adi Stumper, “our recommendations are mostly taken seriously by the municipalities.

I always say we are the critical friend of cities and communities.”

The district association has existed since 1985 – plus there are seven local groups

A separate district association of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) has existed since October 1985. Today the association has around 1150 members, 30 of whom are active, including 20 tour guides.

There are nine working groups within the district association: parking facilities, coding, festivals, GPS, information stand, internet, technology, tours and traffic.

In addition to the district association in Fürstenfeldbruck, there are seven local groups in the district, namely in Eichenau, Germering, in the Grafrath administrative community, in Gröbenzell, in the Mammendorf administrative community, in Olching and Puchheim.

In addition, Adi Stumper is the contact person for the rest of the district.

In addition to organizing bike tours, the district association takes care of the following topics: traffic change by bike, climate protection, traffic policy and safety in the district;

it also makes recommendations to towns and communities.

In addition, it advises its members on questions to do with bicycles, informs them about legal and service issues, politics and tourism, organizes bicycle checks, repair courses, coding campaigns and driving safety training.
