In the summer of 2019, hackers published the personal data of thousands of Mastercard customers on the Internet.

Now some of them are getting compensation – on one condition.

Munich – How much is stolen data worth – and what could a possible compensation for it look like?

There is now an answer for some bank customers with a Mastercard who were victims of a data leak: in the summer of 2019, the data of thousands of bank customers were published on the Internet with their credit card number, full address and telephone number.

According to a report by Der Spiegel

, the data leak affected a total of

around 90,000 people.

Some of them are now receiving compensation.

Mastercard credit cards are available from all major banks such as Sparkasse and Volksbank

As soon as the data leak became known, the banks offered their customers to exchange the affected credit cards free of charge.

However, some of those affected decided, together with the company European Society for Data Protection (EuGD), to sue the payment service provider Mastercard.

All major German banks such as the Sparkasse, Volksbanken or Commerzbank offer Mastercard credit cards for their customers.

The payment service provider defended itself against the lawsuit: The data was not stolen from Mastercard itself, but from a contract service provider.

The data leak only affected the owners of credit cards who were registered with a bonus program for purchases.

The district court and the higher regional court in Stuttgart also ruled in this sense - but one of those affected went on to the Federal Court of Justice together with the EuGD.

However, the parties concerned reached an out-of-court settlement before a hearing.

300 euros compensation for affected Mastercard customers

Now there are 300 euros for all affected Mastercard customers who have been represented by the EuGD and agree to the offer by the end of March.

According to Spiegel

, you will

usually receive an email with the subject “Comparative offer – Mastercard Priceless Specials data leak”.

According to the

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

, the money is to be paid out to around 2,000 people affected at the beginning of May.

Although new clients can no longer join the settlement, the EuGD is still looking for those affected in the proceedings against Facebook and Munich-based fintech Scalable Capital.
