The consequences of inflation, the energy crisis and the Ukraine crisis are expected to have an impact this year: Experts are expecting a sharp increase in the number of homeless people in the coming months.

For the district municipalities, however, this is only speculation.

District – inflation, energy and Ukraine crisis: Many people in the district of Ebersberg are hoping for a better year in 2023. However, Lilo Lüling, Head of the Department for the Prevention of Homelessness (FOL) in Ebersberg, is skeptical about this.

Because the effects of the crises, the social worker fears, will hit many residents of the district with full force in the new year.

Inflation, rising cost of living and high down payments

Although the number of cases of homeless people in the Ebersberg district did not increase significantly in 2022, the FOL had received an increasing number of requests from people seeking help.

"Many people have had major problems, especially because of inflation and the rising cost of living," Lüling regrets.

High advance payments for electricity and heating could drive some district residents into rent arrears this year - or, in the worst case, to homelessness.

"Not everyone can afford the 200 euros more per month for additional costs," emphasizes Lüling.

Fate can strike anyone, says Brigitte Fuhrmann, a former SPD municipal councilor in Forstinning and currently an employee at the Ebersberg youth welfare office.

Therefore, she demands: The individual municipalities and cities should increase the number of emergency housing for possible homeless people.

Municipalities do not see themselves as having an obligation

But the district councils see no need for it.

"We are currently not expecting an increase in the number of homeless people," said EZ from the Anzing town hall.

According to the municipality, high energy and living costs will not necessarily lead to homelessness.

First of all, you want to wait and see in the administrative community of Glonn and in the district town of Ebersberg.

"We are now looking at how the state measures, i.e. the gas price cap and the electricity price brake, work," explains Ebersberg's second mayor Günter Obergrusberger (CSU).

There is only a need for action when the cities and municipalities no longer have the capacity to accommodate individual citizens in an emergency.

In addition, maintaining the homes of those affected is still the primary goal of the municipalities.

Problem: Difficult housing situation in the district

Only the general housing situation in the district is causing problems for all the heads of town hall: "It becomes difficult when more people become homeless than expected," admits Obergrusberger.

In particular, refugees from Ukraine and asylum seekers are currently putting a heavy strain on the affordable housing market.

Nevertheless, the district towns and municipalities see the new year positively.

In complete contrast to the FOL.

"We don't know what to expect," says Lilo Lüling.

"We are prepared for anything."
