Opinion There is no righteous person on the left Israel today

Even after the court ruling, the last word must be in the hands of the legislators, who are allowed to act to change the legal infrastructure or to amend the constitution. It happens all over the world

The first concrete bill, a basic document from which the public debate will begin, has not yet been introduced, and the war arsenal against the legal reform has been activated.

"Strangling democracy", "murdering democracy", "attempted extortion", "gang of criminals", "execution of Begin's doctrine", "immediate danger" - what has not been said.

But while everyone is upset by these harsh expressions, I am troubled by another objection - to be precise, another folding.

magnificent

It's not that the multitude of inflammatory expressions aren't worrisome.

They are severe, but so predictable.

They are pulled out like a Pavlovian reaction - from someone who once called himself the "Bibi-only Bloc" and once the "Change Bloc", but was and remains the "Left Bloc" - towards any policy led by the right.

This can be expressed in a sour face in the face of four peace agreements that can hardly be described as normalization in exchange for an airplane deal;

This can be expressed in writing in the foreign press against the Israeli government and its leader, in a way that does not embarrass the haters of the State of Israel;

This could come in the form of Israeli organizations demanding that the UN Security Council impose sanctions on their country.

And it is also happening now.

No substantive discussion of the proposals themselves, no intention to let the parliamentary procedure take place.

Only cries of grief, incitement for her own sake.

The breaking of the tools and the democratic game.

But all this, as mentioned, is not surprising, and to be honest - not particularly sophisticated either.

What is surprising, and even quite infuriating, is opposition that came from another direction.

A layer of journalists, media people and politicians as well - we heard them in panels, in studios, in demonstrations - who for years called for reforms of the type that Levin is proposing, and now drop the ball from their hands in the last meter before shooting at the basket.

Why?

Those who arranged for themselves a position of honor between the late Prof. Ruth Gavizon and Prof. Menachem Mautner YBLA, and never stopped emphasizing that they do not belong to the national camp.

Those who claimed that it was not a camp discussion, but a fundamentally democratic one.

Even in the last elections we applauded Smotrich, whose program "Law and Justice" is "refreshing".

We lamented the decline in public confidence in the justice system.

All this, until it became clear that the collection of words should stand the test of reality and actions.

Or then, in one moment, they abandoned the long-standing tradition and started stammering: "Yes, but", "a compromise is needed", "this is not the way".

And here, they automatically place themselves between the arguments of "Hungarianization" and "

What happened to those "Center" people pursuing justice and reforming the justice system?

What happened in the 24 hours between Minister Levin's announcement to the newspapers and their statements in the studios?

After all, this is the first time in about 20 years that a public figure, the Minister of Justice, finally proposes a real plan for change, to restore the balance between the authorities.

Is it time to give up?

Is it time to look for reasons for resistance in tassels?

Isn't this the historical time to rise above the political camps and make a clear voice in favor of change?

It is true that the writing was on the wall.

After all, they did not refrain from supporting the outgoing government despite the lack of change on the issue.

They did not criticize the Flik-Flak that caused a storm upon entering the Ministry of Justice.

Nor did they feel contempt for the moves of his predecessor in the position, Nissenkorn.

Nor did they seep in when the head of his party at the time, Benny Gantz, stated that his goal was to subordinate the elected system to the judicial system.

Even in the case of the illegal use of spyglasses, they shouted to a certain level.

And about the torture of witnesses and illegal acts in the Netanyahu trial, they will be furious, as long as the trial is not stopped.

Nevertheless, there is a camp and there is a party.

The biggest disappointment is to discover that the genders of moral superiority shrink and merge in the left camp, even before the legislative process, as mentioned, in the Knesset.

Instead of all the objects of the balance of power, those who fear extralegal judicial activism and the opponents of selective enforcement will celebrate the moment when the change, which they supposedly preached for many years, gets underway - they refrain from supporting the move, just because it was launched from the competitors' track.

It is not clear what is worse: finding out that the political binary overshadowed this important issue as well, or realizing that, in the end, there is no righteous person on the left.
