The Maritime Information and Awareness Exchange Center revealed that piracy around the world fell to its lowest level last year, since statistics began to be recorded in 2008.

And the French Press Agency quoted the center, which is based in the French capital, Paris, as saying in its annual report issued today: “300 maritime piracy and robbery operations were reported last year … and such practices reached their lowest level since 1992.”

The center added: The Gulf of Guinea, located off the western coast of Africa, and is considered a hotspot for piracy, witnessed attacks on only three ships in 2022, compared to 26 ships in 2019, and in the same region, the number of kidnappings decreased to two last year, compared to 146 incidents. in 2019.

Some researchers justified this decline by saying that "many pirates have turned to other activities, such as illegal oil refining, or transporting stolen crude oil."
