The city of Stuttgart wants to break new ground in terms of mobility when planning the new district of Rosenstein.

As a result, less parking space will be created there.

Stuttgart - The conversion of Stuttgart's main train station gives the city the opportunity to rebuild the free track areas in the center of the state capital.

The city has big visions for the new district of Rosenstein.

According to the project website, it should become a “lively, diverse district with a strong sense of unity” among the residents.

85 hectares with up to 5800 residential units are planned for the Rosenstein district.

In addition, schools, day-care centers, trade, commerce and offices are to be built there.

In contrast, fewer spaces will be created for cars in the new district.

This was decided by a majority of the Stuttgart municipal council.

"Stuttgart Rosenstein is designed as an innovative and therefore forward-looking district in which we are also breaking new ground in the area of inner-city mobility," said Mayor Peter Pätzold about the decision, which he sees as an "important stage".

Only 0.3 parking spaces per apartment: Stuttgart is severely restricting parking space in the Rosenstein district

The city of Stuttgart has decided on a key of a maximum of 0.3 parking spaces per apartment for the Rosenstein development area or 0.2 in the Europaviertel due to the proximity of the main train station.

The Committee for Urban Development and Technology approved the planning in November 2022.

With a good connection to public transport and a wide range of car sharing options, the aim is to make cars superfluous for the Rosenstein district.

According to the press release, the mobility concept provides for one parking space with a car-sharing vehicle for every 10 apartments.

Visitors to the district can park in paid parking spaces on site.

"A evasion of traffic looking for a parking space in adjacent urban areas should be prevented by the paid parking space management," the city announced.

Special parking areas are also planned for social services, craftsmen or courier and logistics services.

Doomed or right strategy?

Stuttgart residents discuss plan for Rosenstein district

On the Internet, the opinion of the Stuttgarters on the parking lot planning for the Rosenstein district is divided.

Some can certainly imagine that the concept will work.

"I like the idea," says one Facebook user.

"Great idea.

Would be exactly my thing and there are definitely enough interested parties," writes another on Instagram.

"How nice it must be if you are not always disturbed by annoying cars while cycling," enthuses a user.

The General German Bicycle Club also sees it that way and comments: “How is that supposed to work?

We are curious.

But the combination of foot, bike, public transport and car is innovative.

We are looking forward to it and hope for more space for the bike.”

In the course of the conversion of the main train station in Stuttgart, the track surfaces in the vicinity of the Rosenstein Park will disappear.

However, many are also skeptical about the plan and see the strategy as doomed to failure.

"As if people who can afford expensive new building rents in the city center will voluntarily forgo individual mobility," one user points out.

“Of course, nicely overpriced and also do without the car.

I feel sorry for everyone who lives there and supports the dirt," says another.

"Bad planning.

At least underground parking should be built,” writes one user.
