The Greens want to reposition themselves in the Thuringian state government and present two new ministers.

Doreen Denstädt is to become the first black female East German minister.

The previous migration minister has to vacate his chair.

Erfurt – The Greens are taking a tough path for their new start in the red-red-green Thuringian state government: Migration Minister Dirk Adams had to vacate his seat at the cabinet table in Erfurt against his will on Monday: he received the Greens’ leadership from Prime Minister Bodo at the request of the Greens Ramelow (left) the certificate of dismissal, confirmed a spokeswoman for the State Chancellery.

Almost at the same time, the Greens presented a successor to Adams in the form of police chief inspector Doreen Denstädt.

According to the Greens, Denstädt would probably be the first black female minister in East Germany after she was sworn in at the beginning of February in the state parliament.

After the announced resignation of Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund for personal reasons, the Greens are filling their two ministerial posts in the red-red-green minority government.

Greens state chairman Bernhard Stengele is to become environment and energy minister.

The 59-year-old is also set to take on the role of Vice Prime Minister.

The state spokeswoman Ann-Sophie Bohm spoke of a personnel reorganization of the Greens - in the year before the state elections in 2024.

Stengele described Adams' dismissal as "a very, very difficult process.

We had decided to take this step, but we couldn't take it together.” There were too many blockages in migration policy.

Adams has been migration minister since 2020, before that he was leader of the Greens in the state parliament from 2014.

He was considered by some to be too pale and too hesitant as a minister.

Denstädt, born in 1977 in Saalfeld, Thuringia, says he has only been a member of the Greens since 2021.

She has great respect for the task and above all wants to improve cooperation with the municipalities, said Denstädt.

The civil servant and administrator has so far worked in the police trust center in the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior.

She has direct access to people and has been trained in conflict communication, state spokeswoman Bohm explained the personnel decision.

Her appointment is also a signal that openness is necessary.

According to the state spokeswoman, both personnel decisions and the recall request for Adams were made by consensus in the state board.

"We are going into the realignment with great unity." But it is not yet a preliminary decision for the top candidates of the Greens for the state elections.

Stengele, an actor and director by profession, announced that he would be stepping down as state spokesman.

A successor is expected to be determined at a delegates' meeting of the Greens in early March.

Bohm said Stengele not only gained management experience as party leader, but also as acting director.

He himself describes his predecessor Siegesmund as an "outstanding teacher".

The 45-year-old announced one day before Christmas that she wanted to give up all her offices at the end of January for personal reasons.

So far, she has also been Vice Prime Minister in Ramelow's government and is considered to be assertive.

The red-red-green coalition in Thuringia has governed since 2020 without its own majority and is always dependent on compromises with the opposition.

The Greens are the smallest faction in the state parliament with five members.

In the 2019 state election, they received 5.2 percent of the votes.

In the last available surveys, they were between 5 and 7 percent - without a recognizable clear upward trend.
