The Munich Transport Company (MVG) has submitted the building application for the tram to Johanneskirchen.

A section of the north tangent clears another hurdle.

Munich - Now Zug is in it: The Munich Transport Company (MVG) has submitted the building application for the new tram to Johanneskirchen.

The route is part of the Tram-Nordtangente.

The government of Upper Bavaria (ROB) is now processing the planning approval application.

According to the current planning status, the route to the Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station is to be built between 2024 and 2025 and, if possible, put into operation at the timetable change in December 2025.

According to the transport company, the first work should already start this year.

Tram-Nordtangente in Munich: route to Johanneskirchen runs via St. Emmeram to the S-Bahn

The start of the approval process marks the next milestone on the way to the approximately one-kilometer-long new tram route, which will branch off the route to St. Emmeram at Regina-Ullmann-Straße and connect the Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station.

According to the MVG, it is an important building block for the Tram-Nordtangente, which also includes the routes from Elisabethplatz to Tivolistrasse with a branch to Münchner Freiheit.

With this comparatively short section of new construction, the transport company hopes for a significantly better connection of the north-eastern parts of the city and in future also of Schwabing to the airport S-Bahn.

In addition, a new, combined tram and bus stop in Johanneskirchen should make it much easier to change to the bus lines and the S-Bahn.

Tram-Nordtangente in Munich: There is still a need for clarification for the other sections

The other sections of the northern tangent tram are still being planned, the route via Leopoldstraße is being revised because the tram is now to have its own route independent of car traffic.

It is also still unclear whether the north tangent can cross the English Garden at 800 meters.

MVG boss Ingo Wortmann: "I am pleased that we are making a big step forward with the Tram-Nordtangente.

With the connection to the Johanneskirchen S-Bahn station, the public accessibility of the airport from the north-east of Munich will be improved in particular.”
