ZFE in Lyon: what you need to know to circulate since the beginning of January

Since the beginning of the year, Crit'Air 5 vehicles have been added to those not classified which can no longer drive within the perimeter of the Lyon metropolitan area.

After a "

pedagogical

" period of four months, since January 1, 2023, Crit'air 5 vehicles are no longer allowed to drive in the low emission zone (ZFE) of the metropolis of Lyon.

This ZFE, made compulsory in metropolitan areas by the 2019 mobility orientation law (LOM), will lead to the banning of diesel vehicles in all of these large cities by 2026.

It is a tool for recovering air quality and mitigating climate change;

protection also of the most fragile and exposed inhabitants (children, elderly people, residents of major roads)

Specifically in Lyon, Crit'Air 5 vehicles include all diesel vehicles produced between 1997 and 2000 and motorized two-wheelers registered for the first time before June 1, 2000. 6,227 private vehicles registered in metropolitan France are affected by this ban, i.e. 0.9% of the private car fleet.

This figure rises to 1.4% for professional vehicles (1544).

From September 2023, private vehicles classified Crit'Air 4 will be concerned, i.e. diesel vehicles, between 2001 and 2005 for cars and between mid-2000 and 2004 for motorcycles and mopeds. .

Here again, a four-month educational period will be put in place for a total ban effective January 1, 2024.

What perimeter?

Today, the ZFE concerns the cities of Lyon, Caluire-et-Cuire and certain sectors of Villeurbanne, Vénissieux and Bron located inside the ring road.

This area is called the “core area” of the EPZ.

After a consultation carried out in 2022, the metropolis of Lyon should soon create an "extended zone" integrating the cities of Villeurbanne, Bron and Vénissieux, Pierre-Bénite, Saint-Genis-Laval, Oullins, La Mulatière, Sainte-Foy-lès- Lyon, Sathonay-Camp, Fontaines-sur-Saône, Rillieux-la-Pape, Vaulx-en-Velin, Saint-Fons, Chassieu, Saint-Priest, Décines-Charpieu, Mions and Corbas.

How many vehicles will need to be changed in 2026?

On January 1, 2026, the date of the total application of the ZFE and therefore the ban on diesel vehicles and petrol vehicles prior to 2010, 64.6% of private vehicles currently registered in the metropolis of Lyon will no longer be able to enter the central zone of the metropolis of Lyon.

For utilities, this figure rises to 91.9% of vehicles currently in circulation.

What fines?

A fine of 68 euros (class 3 fine) has been provided for by law for any driver of a passenger car and light commercial vehicle who does not comply with the rules of the ZFE.

This fine rises to 135 euros for heavy goods vehicles, coaches and coaches.

For lack of controls, very few sanctions have been distributed for the moment.

– Petrol and hybrid vehicles between 2006 and 2010, diesel vehicles since January 1, 2011 for cars, between 2007 and 2016 for motorcycles and between 2007 and 2017 for mopeds.

Crit'Air 3

– Petrol and hybrid vehicles between 1997 and 2005, diesel between 2006 and 2010, between mid-2004 and 2006 for motorcycles and mopeds.

Crit'Air 4

– Diesel vehicles, between 2001 and 2005 for cars, between mid-2000 and 2004 for motorcycles and mopeds.
