A 12-year-old girl is being held at a juvenile facility after fatally stabbing her 9-year-old brother, police said.

The attack occurred shortly before midnight Thursday at a residence in the St. Thomas Square community, south of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Tulsa Police Department said in a statement released Friday.

"Officers learned the boys' father was upstairs sleeping when the 12-year-old daughter woke him up and told him that she had stabbed her 9-year-old brother," police said.

City firefighters and emergency technicians from an ambulance service performed CPR on the boy before he was taken to a hospital, authorities said.

The minor underwent surgery but died around 2:30 am Saturday from his injuries, according to police.

The girl was detained at the Tulsa Juvenile Justice Family Center and remained there until at least Friday, police said.

The charges for her arrest were not available and the motive for the alleged attack has not been disclosed.

It was not clear if the girl, whose name was withheld because of her age, has a lawyer.

The Tulsa County Public Defenders' Juvenile Division did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Under Oklahoma law, it can be held for five business days while a petition is filed setting out the possible charges.

Children 12 and under cannot be detained, but state law provides exceptions in cases of serious charges, amounting to felonies, where the child poses a risk to the community or to himself.

Oklahoma law draws the line at age 13 by allowing a child that age or older to be prosecuted as an adult on felony murder charges.

The Tulsa Police Department's Children's Crisis Unit investigated the case.
