Brazil's right-wing ex-president Jair Bolsonaro is apparently considering shortening his stay in the US.

CNN Brazil told Bolsonaro he came to the United States "to stay until the end of the month, but I intend to bring my return forward."

He did not justify this with the discussions about his visa, but with a stay in the hospital.

"In Brazil, the doctors already know about my intestinal obstruction problem because of the knife attack," Bolsonaro said.

Two days before the end of his term on New Year's Eve, Bolsonaro flew to the United States with his family, where he has been in Florida since then.

Bolsonaro was then admitted to a hospital on Monday because of severe abdominal pain.

On Instagram, his wife referred to complaints that Bolsonaro had after a knife attack.

At a campaign event in September 2018, a mentally disturbed man stabbed Bolsonaro and inflicted serious abdominal injuries on him.

On Monday evening (local time), Bolsonaro finally announced on Twitter that he had been released from the clinic.

He published a photo of himself in the hospital bed.

CNN Brazil told Bolsonaro he came to the US to spend time with his family.

'But I haven't had a quiet day.

First there was this unfortunate incident yesterday [Sunday] in Brazil and then my admission to the hospital.”

What role do the alleged visa problems play?

In addition to the hospital stay mentioned by Bolsonaro, there is another reason for his departure considerations: Bolsonaro's visa may have expired.

According to media reports, Bolsonaro is said to have entered the United States on a so-called A visa – but this is only permitted for diplomats or incumbent heads of state.

That's not Bolsonaro anymore.

State Department spokesman Edward Price clarified at a press conference on Monday that A visa holders who no longer work for a foreign government must "depart the United States within 30 days" or apply for another visa.

After the storm on Sunday evening, US Democrats had demanded that the ex-president leave the country.

Meanwhile, thousands of people demonstrated in several Brazilian cities on Tuesday to defend democracy.

They also demanded harsh consequences for the perpetrators.
