After a drop in sales in 2022, BMW wants to grow again significantly in the current year.

Munich – The Munich-based carmaker BMW wants to shift up a gear again this year.

"We will continue on our course of profitable growth in 2023," announced Sales Director Pieter Nota on Tuesday.

In 2022, on the other hand, the carmaker had to accept a drop of 4.8 percent with almost 2.4 million vehicles delivered, as the company announced on Tuesday.

In the final quarter, however, the figures showed a clear upward trend, with sales up by 10.6 percent to 651,798 vehicles delivered.

Despite the strong final sprint, the Bavarians lagged behind Mercedes-Benz in the previous year.

With 2.044 million vehicles, the Swabians sold fewer cars in absolute terms than their arch-rival from Munich.

But Mercedes sales fell by only 0.5 percent in the previous year.

BMW expects a significant increase in sales of electric vehicles

In the current year, BMW wants to make significant gains, especially in fully electric cars.

Here, the share of total sales is expected to rise to 15 percent in 2023.

In the previous year, it was 9 percent with 215,755 vehicles.

This was more than a doubling compared to 2021. "We continue to see high order intake, especially for our all-electric models," emphasized Nota.

In the major markets, sales figures developed similarly over the year as a whole.

The Group experienced the sharpest decline in Europe, at 7.5 percent.

Sales in China fell by 6.4 percent and in America by 2.3 percent.

There were also exceptions: BMW owed the fact that sales in Asia fell significantly more slowly than in the largest sub-market, China, among other things, to strong sales figures from South Korea.
