At least since the World Cup, darts have enjoyed growing popularity.

Association game director Michael Kreuzpaintner from Neubiberg tells what the fascination with the small arrows lies in.

County – Fluid, straight, without power.

“This is how,” reflects Michael Kreuzpaintner, “looks like the ideal movement sequence for darts.” The 59-year-old from Neubiberg is an expert in this field: at the Upper Bavarian Dart Association (OBDV) he acts as game director for all leagues, and as a licensed trainer he takes care of things takes care of the youngsters at his home club, TSV 1860 Munich.

There, in the darts container on the lion grounds of the professional football club, we meet the Neubiberg darts enthusiast, who of course also looks back on the World Cup in London - the official game plan with the manually entered game results is still hanging on the wall.

The World Cup final with the 7:4 victory of the Englishman Michael Smith against the Dutchman Michael van Gerwen was "one of the best", surpassed only by the legendary duel between Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor in 2007 - at that time Michael Kreuzpaintner from Dart fever was grabbed and it hasn't let go of him to this day.

"I expect a ripple effect from the World Cup," says the 59-year-old.

"He can go through all age groups."

Anyone can play against anyone

464 players are currently registered in the OBDV, ranging from 13 to 73 years of age.

"That's the beauty of it," says Michael Kreuzpaintner.

"Whether man or woman, young or old, with or without a disability - everyone can play against everyone else at a comparable level.

That is what makes darts so fascinating.”

Michael Kreuzpaintner brought his treasure chests to the former press room of TSV 1860, which has now been converted into a darts venue.

One with the personal arrows, one with various utensils for training.

Because that's what the 59-year-old likes to do best: imparting his specialist knowledge in school and youth training.

"Darts is not a strength sport"

The fact that Gabriel "Gaga" Clemens, a German, made it to the semi-finals at the World Cup fueled interest in darts.

and of course you can learn something from the World Cup stars just by watching TV: “How does one stand, how does one throw?

'Gaga' Clemens, for example, attracted attention with his calm demeanor.” In the end, however, “everyone has to find their own style”, and buying the dart set of the world elite is no guarantee for more accuracy the next time you visit a darts pub.

Because: "Darts is not a weight sport." The arrows of most players weigh 23 to 25 grams.

"The lighter, the more difficult - beginners should practice with a slightly heavier dart," says Michael Kreuzpaintner.

There are no limits to the imagination when it comes to training. For example, he likes to have newcomers throw dowels into a hole in a cardboard box “so that they can learn the right move”.

Just shoot arrows in the direction of the pane?

No, darts is much more.

"It's very important to focus correctly," says the association's game director.

And nothing works without mathematics: "Calculations are the be-all and end-all." In order to get from 501 to zero with the right throws, the numbers determine the tactics - minus one doesn't count in the end.

“I can be disgusting when I do arithmetic,” says the trainer, referring to the “calculator generation”.

Talent alone is not enough, success can only be achieved with diligence in training.

As with Michael Unterbuchner, team boss of the local regional league team in the “Dart Pub 180” in Haar.

The 34-year-old used to play in the Bundesliga and internationally and is still 164th in the world rankings. His team in Haar is currently the leader of the table.

Goal: rise twice, up to the Bayernliga.

Rules Knowledge: From 501 to 0

In darts, the players alternately throw three darts at the disc - the points achieved are deducted from the starting value of 501, which is usual in tournaments.

Whoever reaches zero points first wins a so-called leg.

On the dartboard, the segments are arranged from 1 to 20 and run through by two narrow rings.

In the colored ring on the outside, the points count double, in the inner colored ring three times (so a 20 there becomes 60 points);

for a hit in the middle (bull's eye) there are 50 points, in the green ring around it (single bull) there are 25 points.

A leg must be ended with a throw on a double field in the outer ring (double-out) or in the bull's eye.

If a player overthrows (i.e. ends up with less than zero points), these throws do not count (“no score”).

Only arrows that get stuck in the target are counted, bouncers or arrows in another arrow (“Robin Hood”) do not count.

The perfect game is to go from 501 to zero in nine throws ("9-darter").
