A minor was killed Tuesday, January 10 during an anti-drug operation in the suburbs of Algiers by "
a warning shot
" from a policeman, who was arrested as part of an investigation ordered by the prosecution, authorities said.
The police "
were surprised
" by young people who wanted to "
obstruct a search
" in Baraki, in the suburbs of Algiers, and one of them fired a warning shot, hitting a young boy who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, according to a press release from the General Directorate of the National Police (DGSN) posted on its Facebook page.
The DGSN specifies that the police officer was “
placed in police custody, his weapon subjected to a ballistic expertise and an investigation opened by the prosecution of El Harrach
”, of which the Baraki district is a part.
The youngster was around 16 years old
The prosecutor of the court of El Harrach also ordered the autopsy of the victim who was "
about 16 years old
", according to the prosecution.
The DGSN points out that the search resulted in the seizure of nearly a thousand psychotropic tablets, an unspecified quantity of drugs and the arrest of two individuals.
The security services regularly announce arrests and the seizure of large quantities of drugs.

In a recent statement to the press, the director of prevention at the level of the National Office for the Fight against Drugs and Drug Addiction (ONLCDT), Ghania Mokdache announced an increase of more than 200% in the consumption of cocaine and 100% for other drugs during the first 10 months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. She also indicated that more than 60 tons of cannabis were seized during the first 10 months of 2022.
