Russia has a single aircraft carrier.

But for years, the pride of the Navy has made negative headlines.

Now there was another incident.

Murmansk – Once the pride of the Russian Navy, the Admiral Kuznetsov has been stranded for years.

The reason: Russia's only aircraft carrier has a huge repair backlog.

And the ship will probably not be actively used by the Navy again any time soon and will not be of use to Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine war.

Accidents and failures on the Admiral Kuznetsow are repeatedly reported.

The latest news: The aircraft carrier was supposed to be moved to a new dock, but it was not seaworthy.

"Emergency situation" at Admiral Kuznetsov: Russia's aircraft carrier remains in poor condition

As reported by

Newsweek

, among others , Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Ukrainian Defense Ministry has announced that the Admiral Kuznetsov remains in poor condition and cannot use its own propulsion system.

The aircraft carrier could have a significant impact on the Ukraine war: The warship is said to have weapon systems that could be used both against ships and for air defense.

In addition, the Admiral Kuznetsov could be used as a base for air attacks on Ukraine.

Originally it was planned that the aircraft carrier would remain in service with the Russian Navy for at least another 15 years.

But since 2017, a wide variety of incidents have been coming together that are slowing down the ship.

The latest reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reportedly happened on Monday, January 9th.

Accordingly, there should be an “emergency situation” on board.

The information could not be verified independently.

Last April, the Russian Navy also had to mourn the loss of the "Moskva", the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.

Aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov: Russian ship is said to be in Murmansk

The Admiral Kuznetsov is said to be in Murmansk on the Barents Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean.

Attempts to move the Russian aircraft carrier to another dock allegedly revealed that the ship would not be able to sail under its own power.

It was only possible to stabilize the aircraft carrier with the support of numerous tugboats.

It is also said that the hull of the Admiral Kuznetsov is in critical condition.

Not only the problems in Murmansk will affect Putin, in the past year there were repeated reports that the Russian army was at the end.

How many aircraft carriers does Russia have?

The Russian armed forces currently only have one aircraft carrier: the Admiral Kuznetsov.

However, the 304 meter long flagship has not been operational for years.

It is considered the so-called lead ship of the "Adimiral Kuznetsov class" and is the second ship of the type after the Lianing, which was sold to China in 1998.

It was named after Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov, who was Admiral of the Soviet Union Navy.

Apparently, it is feared that the ship will tip over and sink.

Waste water should also collect inside the hull, which should worsen the condition of the construction.

A fire broke out on board the Russian flagship last December, causing devastating damage, according to local news portals.

It was previously assumed that Admiral Kuzetsow could be operational again from 2024.

The Admiral Kuznetsov in the Ukraine War?

Aircraft carrier remains in dock

Should that happen, the basic structure of the ship would already be 40 years old.

The series of mishaps related to the aircraft carrier has been going on for years.

First of all, the floating dock PD-50, in which the carrier was overhauled, sank, almost three years ago there was a serious fire on the Admiral Kuznetsov and the list of necessary repairs got longer and longer over the years - the planned costs also kept climbing up.

The floating dock could accommodate ships with a displacement of up to 80,000 tons.

The incident is believed to have been caused by a power outage.

As the magazine

MarineForum

writes, a long laytime can have a negative impact on the substance of the aircraft carrier.

Accordingly, it could become increasingly difficult for the crew to get the Admiral Kuzetsow roadworthy.

It therefore remains uncertain whether operational operation will be possible in the near future.

Most recently, the aircraft carrier could accommodate up to 28 aircraft and over 20 helicopters.

Fire on Admiral Kuznetsov caused a stir: Russia's aircraft carrier did not sink

The Russian Navy has no aircraft carriers other than Admiral Kuznetsov.

The ship was considered notoriously unreliable even when it was active.

The cruiser was nicknamed "Old Smokey" because of its plume of smoke.

Strictly speaking, the breakdown ship is not a classic aircraft carrier, but much smaller than the US ships of the Nomitz class.

Rather, the Russian carrier with its high-curved take-off and landing deck is a large battlecruiser.

Unlike the US Navy, the Russians do not rely on a catapult launch, but launch the aircraft using a ski jump.

The past has shown time and again that this can become a problem for the pilots - especially when the planes are to take off with extensive armament.
