Bad Tölz - The date is always the same: on Epiphany, the managers of the 58 district fire brigades meet in the Tölz Kurhaus for the association meeting.

On Epiphany, the firefighters take stock of the past year.

Most recently there had been a two-year break due to the corona.

Therefore, the commanders and their deputies as well as the mayors as representatives of the communities were all the more pleased to be able to meet in person again.

For the District Fire Councilor Erich Zengerle (54) from Egling, who was elected in August 2020, it was the first Epiphany meeting in this function last Friday.

The fire brigades in the district were alerted a total of 2,355 times in the past year, including 200 false alarms.

There were a total of 29 major and 60 medium fires, and a large contingent went to the Tölzer Kolberbräu on the Marktstraße on July 5, where there had been a deflagration in the kitchen.

The fire on November 25 in a house near Gaißacher Strasse in Bad Tölz was worse, with the occupant dying a week later as a result of the fire.

Unusual accidents and operations

Also unusual was a traffic accident in which a car with five people landed in a group of trees next to the federal highway 13 and almost at the same time a large liquid manure tank slipped from a tractor onto the railway line near Reichersbeuern.

Also worth mentioning is the storm at the end of July in the northern district area, where 100 "operations were processed".

In Geretsried alone, three aerial bombs were found last year and defused in August and December, with up to 2,000 people having to be evacuated.

The deployment of 21 fire brigades and more than 200 volunteers at the European Championships 2022 for cyclists in August went without any problems.

Nevertheless, at the end of the two-hour meeting in the Kurhaus, the mayor of Jachenau, Klaus Rauchenberger (FWG), complained that the fire brigades had been obliged to volunteer, although "hundreds of police officers" drove along the route before and after the race.

At the end of the event, Klaus Rauchenberger, Jachenau's mayor, criticized the use of the fire services at the European Championships, even though "hundreds of police officers" were on duty.

Zengerle explained that, to his knowledge, the use of the fire brigades had been agreed at the previous mayor's service meeting in the Tölz district office.

The district has a proud 3,488 fire brigade members

Although seasoned men in blue uniforms still dominate the crowded Kursaal in Tölz, there are also 206 women in the district fire brigades and 308 children and youth members under the age of 18.

There are a total of 3,488 members between Jachenau and Icking who ensure that fires are extinguished, that accidents are helped, that basements are pumped out in the event of flooding or that barriers are set up at events.

District Fire Councilor Zengerle was happy about the interest in the fire brigade at a young age.

The first children's fire brigade in the district was founded on May 14, 2022 in Icking.

"Six girls and eight boys have found each other, have joined and can thus be introduced to the fire brigade," said Zengerle.

The equipment of the fire brigades in the district is very good

The 54-year-old rated the equipment of the fire brigades in the district as very good.

Numerous new vehicles were purchased and put into service, and there were also a number of local anniversaries to be celebrated.

It is also pleasing that Stefan Kießkalt, treasurer in the fire brigade association for the district, was able to report a financial plus.

However, this will be used up in the 2023 budget due to new acquisitions.

District administrator Josef Niedermaier (FW) spoke about the social importance of the weirs in the district as the highest employer of the Floriansjünger, referring to the most recent events in Berlin.

"What's going on in our system?" he asked.

He can understand frustration and anger, but distrust of the state is by no means the right way.

He called on the firefighters as opinion leaders in society to support cohesion in society.

The third mayor of Tölz, Christof Botzenhart (CSU), praised those gathered who were willing throughout the year to take on responsibility in and for society by volunteering for the fire brigade.
