The District Military Court today (Tuesday) sentenced Major Aviv Songo to five and a half years in prison, an officer in the navy who was convicted of three crimes of incest and the crime of inappropriate behavior towards a female officer who served with him.
Songo pleaded not guilty, and an evidentiary process was conducted in his case, at the end of which he was convicted of committing the crimes.
In addition to the actual prison sentence, the defendant was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence, he was demoted to the rank of private, and it was determined that he will pay compensation in the amount of NIS 40,000 to the victim of the crime.
In a statement from the IDF spokesman, it was stated that the military prosecution is studying the sentence and will consider filing an appeal regarding the punishment.
"The IDF takes a serious view of any sexual harassment and works to bring justice against every soldier and permanent employee who are involved in these crimes," the announcement reads.
The verdict was handed down in September of last year, and the military prosecution appealed for an actual prison sentence of eight years. His sentence will begin in two weeks.
