This Monday, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, received his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, in Santiago.

Both leaders referred to the events that occurred this Sunday in Brasilia, where supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro broke into the Congress building, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.

“The democratic pact of the Americas is in danger because it is not an exclusively South American country.

The same thing that happened in Brasilia happened in Washington… It is an extreme right-wing coup, for or against something they do not want,” Petro said.

“There can be no nuances about what happened.

These actions are unacceptable, as are complicit silences, and they cannot be relativized or ignored.

This situation is worrisome for our countries.

Our region must have a clear position on the matter,” Boric said.

They also discussed the peace process, in which the Colombian government recognized Chile's role as guarantor at the dialogue table between the Government and the ELN, and for its support in consolidating the 2016 Peace Agreement.

"Peace in Colombia is also peace in the region, a peace that we cannot stop building and that Chile is also firmly committed to through the actions that we have already detailed and also because of the implications it has for our homeland" Boric said.

This is the first state visit since Gustavo Petro took office as president in August 2022.

This Monday, by the way, Boric indicated that this 2023 marks the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Colombia and Chile.
