The New Year's Eve riots and the uncovered coup plans by a group of Reich citizens had given rise to the idea of a coalition promise again - but the plans of Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) are more stringent than previously agreed.

During the coalition's internal debate about tightening gun laws

Faeser therefore wants to take into account the arguments of the FDP.

"The FDP has one point in which it is right," said Faeser in the ZDF "Morgenmagazin".

In doing so, she referred to the argument that the already existing rules of the existing weapons law were not controlled sufficiently by the authorities.

The minister admitted that this is due to a lack of staff in local government.

"There was a whole time when everyone in Germany just wanted to save, especially in public administration," said Faeser.

That was a mistake.

Existing rules should be evaluated

However, she believes that there is understanding within the FDP for the ban on semi-automatic weapons for private individuals planned in her draft.

That the Liberals wanted to evaluate the existing rules was fine.

"There's nothing wrong with that," said Faeser.

The coalition could do that in addition to the tightening.

On Monday, after the riots on New Year's Eve, Faeser's ministry presented initial plans for tightening gun laws.

A ban on semi-automatic weapons similar to military weapons is planned for private individuals, according to a draft bill.

The so-called small weapon license should therefore be required for the possession of a crossbow.

There should also be tightening for alarm guns.

In December, Faeser reaffirmed the tightening of gun laws agreed in the coalition agreement.

The background was the alleged coup plans of a group from the Reich citizen scene, which became known through a major raid.

Criticism of the plans came from the FDP.

“Current law has long permitted the disarmament of Reich citizens and enemies of the constitution.

New ban debates don't help," wrote the deputy FDP chairman Konstantin Kuhle on Twitter on Monday.
