A BRB train is parked incorrectly in the track bed.

The railway workers have never seen anything like it.

The first shock is deep in the students and emergency services.

What is known about the Peiting train accident so far.

Peiting – Shrill sirens through Peiting at half past seven in the morning.

The Peitinger fire brigade has informed all weirs in the area.

There is talk of a train accident.

The train that transports the students from Weilheim to Schongau in the morning is affected.

Around 50 passengers – almost exclusively children and young people – sit on the train.

Big alarm in Peiting: In the event of a train accident, everyone has the images of Garmisch in their heads

At this point in time, no one knows the extent of the catastrophe.

A train has derailed.

But has he fallen over?

Is anyone hurt?

Dead?

Those responsible have the bad images of Garmisch in their heads.

Peiting's fire brigade commander Klaus Straub alarmed widely.

An overturned train: there is no hesitation.

Only on site does it become clear: the train is still standing

On site, it becomes clear: the train has derailed, but is standing on the track bed.

Despite all the horror, relief spreads.

Lucky in misfortune: because at this point, just before entering the station, the engine driver slows down the speed.

For some fire brigades there is an all-clear.

Nevertheless, more than 100 emergency services are deployed here.

Blue light everywhere.

Federal police officers take one passenger after the other off the train and question everyone.

Some of them, including many children, are terrified.

Two passengers are in shock.

They are being treated by the paramedics.

"It shook, many are frightened.

I'm shocked, we were really shaken up."

Student (12) about the moment of the accident in the derailing train

"I didn't really get overwhelmed with what was happening at first," says one young person.

"It shook, many are frightened.

I'm shocked, we were really shaken up," a twelve-year-old from Hohenpeißenberg tells us.

Together with her friend she was on the way to the Schongau high school.

Just like every morning.

"I just thought, what should I do?

Hopefully we don't tip over."

"We were really lucky that it happened just before the train station," says her friend.

If the train had only gone a little faster, it would be unthinkable, she says.

The two girls will probably not forget this trip to school in a hurry.

Incredulous reaction in the town hall: "The train derailed" - "No, that's no joke"

A firefighter from Peiting calls the municipality.

Someone from the building yard should come and unlock the old Peiting-Ost station building so that the people being escorted out of the train can warm up.

"The train derailed." Disbelieving reaction on the other end of the line.

"No, that's not a joke," he says.

"We have checked the situation so far and will start with the rescue next," explains a Deutsche Bahn emergency manager on site.

There are no injuries.

The train should be put back on the tracks as soon as possible.

It is to be lifted with air cushions and brought back onto the rails.

Until then: It may take a while.

And anyway: The superstructure can only be inspected once the train has been taken away.

"We have to check the drivability first." It can be assumed that the route will remain closed for the time being.

The question of how the derailment could have happened?

The crisis manager does not want to make any statement about this for the time being.

We remember Garmisch: Here people are still looking for the cause of an accident that claimed several lives.

The federal police, who are responsible for accidents involving the railways, are also on site.

"We are now investigating and trying to find out what the cause is," said Andreas Reif from the federal police.

"Is it technical or human error?" All of this has to be clarified first.

Helpless shaking of the head of the railway employees - they had never seen anything like that

Three hours after the accident, Bahn employees examine the scene of the accident.

The train is still on the track bed.

A rail is broken.

A consequence of the accident?

Or the cause?

Helpless shaking of the head at the train employees.

They had never seen anything like it.

At this moment, it is hard to believe that train traffic will resume quickly on the route between Weilheim and Schongau.

It takes hours before a special squad arrives to get the train back on track.

And here we will continue to write happily when the special device has actually finally arrived.

All this will take a long time.

For the rescue workers who arrived, the mission ended faster than feared.

During such an operation, "there was a lot going on," explains commander Klaus Straub.

Large areas were also alarmed, heading south to the Lechrain to Apfeldorf.

The number of firefighters deployed was then quickly reduced when it became clear that the train had not fallen over and that no tragedy was taking place here in Peiting like in Garmisch.

"The situation de-escalated quickly - even if the alert was such that the train could be lying on its side.

Then things look completely different.”

Nevertheless, the blue light squad is gigantic.

The Peitinger Wehr is on site with five vehicles and 35 men and five vehicles, Schongau with 25 men and four vehicles.

There are also men from the THW, rescue workers, men from the Schongau police station and the federal police.

At the end of the day, they go home knowing that this catastrophe in Peiting could have ended badly.
