The United Kingdom tried to go one step further to compete in the space race.
Virgin Orbit's modified Boeing 747 aircraft, nicknamed "Cosmic Girl", took off Monday in England's Cornwall county, in a first launch for the country from British soil.
But nearly two hours after the plane lifted off and the rocket fired its engines to blast off into space, Virgin Orbit revealed the launch was a failure.
