The Department of Health today (11th) launched a joint operation with the police to crack down on the illegal sale of oral drugs for the new crown.

During the operation, a 37-year-old man was arrested for illegally selling or possessing unregistered pharmaceutical products, or selling a suspected unregistered pharmaceutical product called "Primovir" without a doctor's prescription.

Upon conviction, the maximum penalty for each offense is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for 2 years.

The incident is still under investigation.

The Department of Health recently received information that someone was selling new crown oral drugs through social platforms, and immediately launched an investigation, and took a joint operation with the police today. A 37-year-old man was suspected of illegally selling suspected unregistered pharmaceutical products and containing Part 1 Schedule 3 poison prescription drugs were arrested.

The Department of Health's investigation is still ongoing.

According to the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Cap. 138), all pharmaceutical products must be registered with the Hong Kong Pharmacy and Poisons Board (the Board) before they can be sold in the market.

Illegal sale or possession of unregistered pharmaceutical products or sale of Part 1 Schedule 3 poisons without a medical prescription are criminal offences. The maximum penalty for each offense is a fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for 2 years.

At present, there are only two new crown oral drugs Paxlovid "Paxlovid" and monapiravir "Molnupiravir" supplied by Pfizer Hong Kong Co., Ltd. and Merck Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. of the United States respectively in Hong Kong. Chapter 138A) is registered as a Hong Kong pharmaceutical product.

At present, the two new crown oral drugs can only be supplied to public and private medical institutions and doctors, and patients can only be prescribed the relevant drugs by registered doctors on demand

The Department of Health stated that when the Department discovers that someone is suspected of illegally selling or possessing unregistered pharmaceutical products, it will immediately launch an investigation and, if necessary, launch joint operations with other law enforcement agencies.

If the Department of Health and other law enforcement agencies find any violations, they will definitely be dealt with according to law.

The Department of Health and other law enforcement agencies will continue to step up inspections and law enforcement to protect public health.

A DH spokesman strongly urged members of the public not to buy or consume products with unknown ingredients or sources.

All registered pharmaceutical products must have a Hong Kong registration number on the packaging in the format "HK-XXXXX".

The safety, quality and efficacy of unregistered pharmaceutical products are not guaranteed.

The Department of Health appeals to members of the public who have purchased the relevant products to stop using them immediately, and to seek advice from medical professionals if they have any doubts or feel unwell after use.

Members of the public can submit the relevant products to the Drug Office of the Department of Health at Room 1801, Wu Chung Building, 213 Queen's Road East, Wanchai during office hours for disposal.
