Can we classify the songs of Michel Sardou?

2023-01-11T11:50:34.309Z

W9 unveils this Wednesday a poll on the 20 titles of the singer that the French prefer. With more than 340 titles, the artist is the last owner of French variety.

This is one of the good news of the year 2023: Michel Sardou is back on stage for a series of concerts.

While he had sworn never to sing again, the taulier - title he disputes with Eddy Mitchell - takes back his microphone from Marshal and will perform in the huge Paris La Défense Arena.

To wait until the end of the year, W9 had the idea of classifying the favorite songs of the French in all of Sardou's repertoire.

The 20 most popular titles

Thanks to an Ifop poll, W9 ranks this Wednesday the 20 most popular titles of the artist.

Twenty songs out of nearly three hundred and forty, skimming is tough.

There are, of course, the classics "Lacs du Connemara", the powerful "I'm going to love you", the heady "Maladie d'amour", the poignant "Le France", the intoxicating "La Java de Broadway" or the enigmatic “I fly”.

Classic, but effective.

Purists will say that we don't classify Mozart's works or that we don't choose between mom and dad.

But to class is to honour.

And reward a rich career of 50 years and more than 100 million albums sold.

Should we stop at 20 songs?

The strength of Sardou, of his repertoire and of his authors is to have explored all genres: the deep songs of the beginnings (

Five years past

,

A child

,

We will have no child

), the (really) controversial titles (

Good evening Clara

,

Deborah

,

They have oil, but that's all

,

I want to marry her for one evening

), declarations of love (

The old married couple

), history lessons (

Danton

,

L'An Mil

), the gags - sometimes misunderstood - (

Forbidden to babies

,

Le temps des colonies

,

What did he say

), ending loves (

La défensive

), musical short films (

Le prix d'

unhomme), UFOs (

W454

), pop hymns (

Tu es pierre

,

J'y believe

,

San Lorenzo

)... We could go on and on.

A career that is difficult to sum up to 20 titles

Finally, a theorem exists: each theme corresponds to a Sardou song.

It is his strength.

Storyteller, charmer, columnist, pamphleteer, the one who will celebrate his 76th birthday on January 25 is a jack-of-all-trades that is difficult to sum up in 20 ultra-popular titles – which ultimately correspond little to him as the documentary shows, because these are the songs they like least.

But the public has its reasons that reason ignores.

This classification has the merit of making us push the song, especially since it will be followed by two concerts: one very (too?) classic in 2013 ("Les grands moments") and one of the best of the artist in 2011 when Michel Sardou dug into the nuggets of his repertoire (“The bad man”, “The eyes of an animal”, “In the name of the father”, “Sun or not”) while re-orchestrating his past hits in an original way.

The principle being to have a good evening "En Chantant"
