(CNN Spanish) ––

After years of controversy, he won diversity in the 80th edition of the Golden Globes. And he did it during the triumphant return of the award ceremony to the American small screen, after in 2022 will be done silently.

Among the winners were black actors and actresses, two Asians, two Latino productions, a composer from India, among others.

The evening's host, Jerome Carmichael, kicked off the ceremony by recounting how he secured this role.

Comedian that he is, he wasn't shy about throwing darts at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association over the controversy over the lack of diversity.

“I'm your host and I'll tell you why… Because I'm black,” Carmichael said.

The comedian also criticized the association for what he said was a lack of black members before the death of George Floyd in 2020, which sparked a series of protests across the United States.

Mexico and Argentina shine at the Golden Globes

Two of the awards stayed in Latin America.

Best animated film was Guillermo del Toro's vision of "Pinocchio," a story the Mexican director said he's wanted to do since he was little.

"What makes me most happy is being here with you in person," del Toro said.

"Some of us are drunk, what better than that?" he joked.

Citing what he said was a great year for animation, the director mentioned that these kinds of productions aren't just for kids.

"It's not for children, but children can see it if it's explained to them," he added.

"Argentina, 1985" took the Golden Globe for the best foreign film.

The film is inspired by the work of prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, who at the end of 1985 brought to trial the soldiers who led the bloodiest military dictatorship in the history of Argentina.

"For all the people of Argentina, after the world championship, this is a great joy. I love you," said the actor Ricardo Darín, one of the protagonists, while the music played with which they cut his speech in Spanish.

Perhaps a slip of the ceremony was the short time, compared to other speeches, that the production granted for the Argentines to thank their award.

Minorities, the highlight of the Golden Globes 2023

One of those who didn't let the piano take away from her speech was actress Michelle Yeoh, who won best actress in a musical or comedy.

Yeoh talked about how getting older reduces opportunities for women in Hollywood to get roles.

“As time goes by – I turned 60 last year – and I think all of you women understand this, as the days, the years, the numbers increase, the opportunities also decrease.

Then the best gift came:

Everything, Everywhere All at Once

, "said the actress.

He also thanked its directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, for daring to write the story of an immigrant.

“This film for me was a great tribute to so many women like those around us, who are sometimes invisible, who we take for granted,” she said.

“There are so many things that they can relate to, and all because they were chasing the American dream.”

A recognition for the LGBTQ community

Producer Ryan Murphy received the Carol Burnett Award and spoke about LGBTQ representation in Hollywood.

And he did it by giving MJ Rodríguez, the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe, the opportunity to receive the ovation that she did not have in 2022, because the awards were not broadcast on television.

To demonstrate the impact of representation, Murphy spoke about the lives and careers of Billy Porter, Niecy Nash, Matt Boomer and Jeremy Pope, who, the producer says, were once told they couldn't become who they are because of their sexual identity.

“I have dedicated much of my speech to these wonderful actors with whom I have worked to demonstrate faith and progress.

When I was young in the 1970s, watching the

Carol Burnett Show

at home , I never, ever saw a person like me receive an award or have a part on a TV show.

It's hard being an LGBTQ kid in the United States, and really, all over the world, then and now.

And I have a few words for you, Florida… You are often told that you will become nobody, you have to turn off your light to survive.

But for those kids watching tonight, I give MJ, Billy, Niecy, Matt and Jeremy an example of what's possible," Murphy said to applause.

“The Carol Burnett Award was created in 2018 to honor excellence in television.

The award was first presented at the 76th Golden Globe Awards on January 6, 2019," according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
