Bavaria has to lose weight.

At least according to the latest evaluation by the State Office for Statistics.

Many adults have too much on their hips.

Fürth – The clichéd idea of a Bavarian is a gwampered man sitting in a tavern in traditional costume – in front of him a beer and a roast pork or, in Franconia, a Schäufele.

Certainly a greatly exaggerated idea.

But that with the affluent belly is becoming more and more the truth.

Because a recently published statistic attests the Free State a weight problem.

More than half of Bavarian men weigh too much

Every second adult in Bavaria is overweight.

These are the bare, unembellished facts published by the State Statistics Office in Fürth on Wednesday.

Accordingly, men are particularly affected.

The office took the body mass index (BMI) as the basis.

This is calculated from the weight divided by the square of the height in meters.

A value of 25 or more is considered overweight.

If one exceeds the 30, one even speaks of obesity or adiposity.

According to the published statistics, 44 percent of male residents of the Free State are considered overweight.

17 percent are even obese.

The women fare a little better.

27 percent of them are overweight.

Only 13 percent are considered obese.

The data for the statistics were collected in 2021 as part of the microcensus.

The trend towards obesity has also been increasing for years.

This development can also be observed in children.

Munich is slimmer than the rest of Bavaria

The typical Bavarian can also be modeled using the microcensus data.

On average, he is 1.79 meters tall and weighs 85.2 kilograms.

So he's overweight.

The BMI is 26.7.

The average Bavarian woman is 1.66 meters tall and weighs 68.2 kilograms.

She is of normal weight.

Her BMI is 24.8.

The place of residence also makes a difference.

According to statistics, people who live in cities or urban regions are somewhat slimmer than people living in rural areas.

You have a BMI of 25.2.

In semi-urban areas it is 26 - in rural areas 26.1.

The state capital even forms an amazing downward outlier here.

In Munich, the BMI is 24.7.

However, other factors such as differences in the age composition of the population may also play a role here.
