On New Year's Eve, rescue workers were excessively and systematically attacked by young men.

Markus Lanz discusses with Friedrich Merz how this could have happened.

Ten days after the turn of the year, Friedrich Merz is still stunned when he thinks of the pictures from Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia, where firefighters were thrown at firefighters, among other things.

"I find it horrible.

I am shocked by the violence against the police, against rescue workers, against bystanders, private families who were affected," said the federal chairman of the CDU at Markus Lanz.

The politician attributes the completely "unacceptable" behavior to lax criminal prosecution in the affected federal states, which is fueling the escalation in the hotspots.

As a result, there is a lack of clear signals.

Merz then draws a link to the climate protests in Lützerath, where the police are also exposed to physical attacks.

Lützerath is also a topic for Markus Lanz

The journalist Eva Quadbeck, on the other hand, sees the New Year's riots at Markus Lanz on a higher level - in terms of violence - than the protests in Lütherath or on May 1st.

In this context, she speaks of a "new dimension" because people were attacked who wanted to save lives.

She also advocates giving more weight to causal research in this discussion.

Markus Lanz takes this suggestion to heart and asks about the reason for the recent riots.

The sociologist Aladin El-Mafaalani notes that today's representatives of the state are no longer shown unreserved respect.

The result is a continuous loss of authority by the law enforcement agencies.

El-Mafaalani sees a trend.

Citizens would question structures much more, which is actually a positive development that runs through all levels of education.

Escalating corona protests or fights at football games have shown, however, that respect for police officers has fallen massively in some cases.

Insults and attacks are therefore the order of the day for many emergency services.

Merz insists once again that even small offenses should be punished more severely.

This would result in a signal effect.

Quadbeck agrees with the CDU boss.

She thinks it is appropriate to ensure clear conditions in elementary school.

Problem children should, for example, be banned from the house together with their parents if they repeatedly misbehave.

"Markus Lanz": Are the riots the result of a failed integration policy?

The moderator points out that in Berlin two-thirds of the perpetrators from New Year's Eve come from Syria or Afghanistan.

Was the failed integration the trigger for the riots?

El-Mafaalani answers this question with a "yes" because many young people feel pushed to the fringes of society.

This is by no means an excuse for their behavior, as the education expert emphasizes.

However, it is a possible cause.

"Markus Lanz" - these were his guests on January 10th

  • Friedrich Merz

    , CDU federal chairman

  • Eva Quadbeck

    , Editor-in-Chief of “RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland”

  • Aladin El-Mafaalani

    , sociologist and education expert

  • Marcel Fratzscher

, President of the German Institute for Economic Research

Friedrich Merz, on the other hand, expresses himself less cautiously.

"We are dealing here with a real problem of a lack of integration of young people, mostly with a migration background, mainly from the Arab world." The leading politician definitely does not want to lump all migrants together.

Many migrants have integrated excellently and now have to be ashamed of the recent events.

Friedrich Merz sees migration as the reason for the New Year's Eve riots

However, according to Merz, immigrants from the Arab world often refuse to respect local values and rules.

El-Mafaalani contradicts this statement.

In addition, the name query made by the CDU after New Year's Eve undermines the idea of integration because it shows those affected that they will never belong because of their origin.

Marcel Fratzscher is not only looking for the cause of the riots in migration anyway.

“It has something to do with the environment in which people live.

It has something to do with opportunities.

It has something to do with future prospects,” says the economist.

Young people without school qualifications or training often feel abandoned by the state, which is why they have less trust in state organisations.

Migration is intended to counteract the shortage of skilled workers

Fratzscher also sees migration as an opportunity and much less as a problem in the increasing debate about the shortage of skilled workers in Germany.

According to him, almost two million employees are already missing, and the trend is rising.

For this reason, the Federal Republic must become more attractive for foreign skilled workers.

Merz strongly disagrees here.

In his eyes, Germany is already overpopulated, since we are home to 84 million people, although according to his calculations there is only enough space for 80 million citizens.

In addition, there must be more controls upon entry, because: "We already have enough immigration into the social systems today," claims Merz.

After Fratzscher had reminded Merz that demographic change would lead to a population decline, El-Mafaalani finally did away with the illusion of perfectly trained migrants.

Many of the training courses we aspire to would not even exist abroad.

The sociologist's solution is therefore as follows: immigrant adults must be trained while their children have sufficient access to education in schools.

Only in this way can integration produce positive results.

"Markus Lanz" - The conclusion of the show

When researching the causes of the New Year's Eve riots, two reasons came into focus.

Initially, the state was attested to lack of authority.

The guests agreed that in the future those responsible should pronounce tougher penalties for crimes.

This is the only way to stop the current negative trend.

There was less agreement on the issue of integration.

In the discussion, Friedrich Merz appeared several times as a warning, bringing the dangers of (unchecked) migration to the fore.

The others present, on the other hand, underlined the value of immigrants, who, however, need much more support from the state in order to adapt sufficiently.
