The president of Bordeaux Métropole, Alain Anziani, explained on Wednesday that a “blank” experimentation of the low-emissions zone could be put in place as early as 2024.

Some vehicles will soon no longer be able to circulate in the Bordeaux metropolis.

To comply with the law, the conurbation must have a low-emissions zone (ZFE) by January 1, 2025 at the latest. During his wishes to the press on Wednesday, the president of Bordeaux Métropole and mayor of Mérignac, Alain Anziani , specified that there should be no “

great surprises

” at the end of the consultation: the so-called “

educational

” scenario should be retained.

This action plan involves limiting from 2024 the circulation of the most polluting vehicles (Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified), i.e. around 7% of the metropolitan car fleet.

In 2027, the ban will be extended to Crit'Air 3 and finally in 2030 to Crit'Air 2. The ZFE will not affect electric or hydrogen vehicles (Crit'Air Verte) and those with less polluting gasoline ( Crit’Air 1).

“A risk of yellow vests”

Communications for educational purposes will be made by the metropolis from 2023 for a "

blank

" experimentation of the ZFE in 2024, in order "

not to surprise the inhabitants

", specifies Alain Anziani, recalling that "

strong accompanying measures

" will be put in place, at a cost that could range from 40 to 120 million euros.

What is certain is that there are deaths linked to pollution

”, explains the elected official, air pollution having caused the premature death of at least 238,000 Europeans in 2020. “

Our hope of life decreases by two to three years due to pollution

", he recalls, considering that the establishment of this ZFE is necessary, "

in the interest of the population

".

Not minimizing possible opposition, even "

a risk of yellow vests

", the president of the metropolis adds that it is necessary "

that we manage to explain that this is not a punitive measure but a measure for all of us

" .

Moreover, this ZFE is not the only axis developed by Bordeaux Métropole on questions of mobility.

In 2023, the tramway will reach Mérignac airport and several extensions are planned, in particular from Bordeaux Saint-Jean station to the airport.

The metropolitan RER project is also under construction.

The cumulative objective of all these measures is that “

people understand that they will not be faster by taking their car

”.

The elected official provides for example certain journey times four times shorter by taking the metropolitan RER rather than using a private car.
