The Minister of Equality and 'number two' of Podemos urges to negotiate and close a coalition formula with Sumar for the next general elections

Irene Montero, Minister of Equality and

number two

of Podemos, has shown herself hopeful and eager this Wednesday for her formation to reach a coalition agreement with Sumar, the party that the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, is setting up for the next general elections.

“It is important that we negotiate and close as soon as possible.

I think we should do it now ”, she urged in an interview on Cadena SER.

Montero has shown her respect for the times and the decisions that Díaz makes in the process to put her political project on its feet, but she has also shown her desire that it end soon.

"Hopefully, he finishes setting up her party as soon as possible and decides to be the candidate of her party and also of Podemos and we can negotiate a coalition," she said.

To sum up, the new political project promoted by Díaz still has many unknowns to clear up and Podemos is increasing the pressure for him to sit down to negotiate and announce his candidacy, something he plans to do at the beginning of the year.

Pablo Iglesias pointed to the vice president as the party's candidate for the next general elections when she announced that she was leaving the Executive to be the candidate in the elections in the Madrid region.

However, since that date, March 2021, there have been tensions with Díaz and Iglesias himself, who as a former secretary general has demanded "respect" for Podemos.

The party led by Ione Belarra demands an electoral coalition with Díaz, without integrating or diluting into a new party, and a "generous agreement", that is, starting positions on the lists.

"In this political space we have always been different parties and formations that have reached agreements respecting each other," Montero stressed, who pointed out the convenience of uniting Podemos and Sumar through the coalition formula to govern with more force.

"We believe that a coalition agreement is possible and that is what we are going to work for," he stated when asked if they did not contemplate another formula, such as integration.

To get to that step, Yolanda Díaz still has to decide and announce that she will be the candidate for her political project.
