In 2022, many more people applied for asylum in Germany than in the previous year - the largest increase was among people from Turkey.

There are also war refugees from Ukraine.

Berlin - The images of refugees from Ukraine at German train stations are still present in many people's minds: often traumatized women and children got off the trains and buses in masses while their husbands had to defend their country against the army of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to a report by the ARD capital studio, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has now published the official statistics on this: According to this, Germany took in around 1,044,000 people last year who left their country because of the Ukraine war, they say .

These people do not have to apply for asylum.

In addition to the Ukrainian refugees, 244,132 people applied for asylum in Germany last year.

In 2021 there were 190,816.

That means an increase of around 28 percent.

Asylum applications in Germany: rapid increase in people from Turkey

Most asylum applicants come from Syria: 70,976 people made an initial application - an increase of 29.3 percent compared to 2021. According to Bamf statistics, those seeking protection from Afghanistan came in second with 36,358 initial applications.

Here, the authority recorded a significant increase of 56.2 percent.

However, the largest increase was evidently among those seeking protection from Turkey.

23,938 people from there made an initial application - an increase of 238.7 percent.

The statistics do not give any reason for this.

The increase may have something to do with the economic situation in Turkey, they say.

A good half of the asylum applications approved - large differences depending on the country of origin

The Federal Office issued positive decisions for a good half of the asylum applications (56.2 percent).

However, there are major differences depending on the country of origin: the authority decided 90.3 percent of asylum applications from Syrians seeking protection were positive.

This was the case in 83.5 percent of Afghan applicants.

In the case of Iraqi people seeking protection, the so-called protection rate was only 22.5 percent.

According to the ARD report, the statistics show that the number of initial applications has risen sharply since last autumn.

Specifically, there were 26,672 applications in December - an increase of 94.5 percent compared to December 2021.

The statistics do not show why the numbers rose so much in December.

Refugees are also repeatedly used as a means of exerting pressure in Europe: in an interview with IPPEN.MEDIA, EU asylum experts warn of a possible strategy by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the same time, the European Union is more at odds on almost no other issue than on asylum policy.
