In Israel, today (Wednesday) is the Hebrew Language Day, which is an awareness day for promoting the status of the Hebrew language.
Hebrew Language Day is observed every year on the 21st of Tevet (this year it was brought earlier since it falls on Shabbat), which is the birthday of Eliezer ben Yehuda, who became a symbol of the revival of the language.
Hebrew is woven into the story of Ben Yehuda's life.
Thus, for example, when his eldest son (Ben-Zion, who later changed his name to Itamar) was born, he determined that his son would only hear Hebrew speech, and forbade his wife Deborah to speak with him in other languages.
But there were members of the Hebrew language committee who saw his proposals as far-reaching and sought to stop him.

What bothered Ben Yehuda was the fact that the Hebrew language lacked words for "the simple matters of life".
That is, words that will be used for everyday needs.
Among other things, he sought to create new words out of nothing, and sometimes took roots from the Arabic language and cast them into Hebrew molds.
In total, Ben Yehuda innovated about 220 words, of which about three quarters were absorbed into Hebrew: he innovated names of foods, for example
cauliflower
,
omelette
,
sausage
,
jam
and
ice cream
;
Names with impressive weight such as
police
,
sidewalk
,
pub
,
restaurant
and
college
;
Words denoting tools and devices, such as
umbrella
,
binoculars
,
train
,
airplane
,
bicycle
and
clock
, as well as many other useful words including
migration
,
surprise
,
identity
,
bacteria
,
a maze
, a
discovery
and
a glove
.

And of all the postcards
And with all the problems
A people was created and a land arose
And a language that has fallen asleep
She started waking up again
And talking and talking...
("The Convoy Song", lyrics: Ali Mohr)
were we wrong
We will fix it!
