Customs earlier received reports that some sellers set up special pages in online community marketplaces to sell suspected counterfeit cosmetics, skin care products and perfumes, including well-known brands SK-II, Clarins and Chanel.

Afterwards, customs officers disguised themselves as customers and conducted online test purchases. After in-depth investigations and with the assistance of the trademark owner, they took enforcement action yesterday (10th) and raided a residential unit in Yuen Long, arresting a 45-year-old suspect the man involved.

During the operation, Customs seized about 2,600 suspected counterfeit products with an estimated market value of about $960,000.

The case is still under investigation and more arrests cannot be ruled out.

Customs is also tracing the source of the goods involved in the case and will send samples to the Government Laboratory for testing to confirm their safety.

Customs urges consumers to patronize reputable shops or online stores. If in doubt about the authenticity of the goods, they should first check with the relevant trademark holder or its agent.

Customs also reminds those who sell items online not to sell counterfeit items, and to be cautious when purchasing items, as selling counterfeit items is a serious crime and they will be liable for criminal charges.

According to the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who sells or possesses for the purpose of selling counterfeit goods commits an offense and is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for 5 years upon conviction.
