QUIZ - Present, imperfect or pluperfect subjunctive... What is the difference between all these tenses? Can you tell them apart? Le Figaro offers to verify it with this short test.

Unloved by the French, the subjunctive was the object of nightmares for some of us at school.

As we know, the conjugation of our beautiful language has never been easy.

It is a source of worries and doubts.

As a reminder, the subjunctive mode is the time of doubt, uncertainty and the possible.

It is used when the action is supposed, doubtful, desired.

It has four tenses: the present, the imperfect, the past and the pluperfect.

However, we only use two in speaking (the present and the past).

The other two are more used in writing, judged to be very literary.

The subjunctive is found after the relative pronoun “que”.

So what should be written between "it is possible that he does not want it" or "it is possible that he does not want it"?

When should we use the subjunctive?

"It was necessary that he speak" or "it was necessary that he speak"?

So, will you pass this test without fault?
