For long minutes at the funeral, Aryeh Deri sobbed and said that he could not speak.
It wasn't a show.
In less than half a year, two-thirds of the people he had consulted with for decades regarding the conduct of the Shas had passed away, and Deri now knew that he was the last one left of that generation.
This is a significant drama and a blow to the decision-making ranks of Shas. For decades there were three rabbis who fully supported what they called the "holy movement": Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Rabbi Shalom Cohen and Rabbi Shimon Abdani. The first died in 2013, the last two died this year A few months apart from each other.
Now the Council of Torah Sages of Shas has three "young" rabbis, if you can call it that: Rabbi Moshe Maya, 84, Rabbi Reuven Elbaz, 78, and Rabbi David Yosef, 65. This means that in all matters related to the decision-makers , a new page is now officially opened in the Shas movement.

Even now, this is not the end of the verse, and we are facing an interim period in which it is likely that the last and significant position of Rabbi Abdani, president of the Council of Torah Sages of Shas, will remain open. that his tenure as the Spanish chief rabbi will end this July.
If this is the case, the question will remain open as to whether among the rabbis in the Shas movement there will then be two of Rabbi Ovadia's sons. In that case, there is a possibility that Rabbi David Yosef will be the leading candidate for the position of the next Sephardic Rabbi of the State of Israel.
