The accent in Austin Butler's voice was quite striking: the actor spoke in a deep tone and, apparently, with the same southern accent that he adopted to play Elvis Presley.

When Austin Butler took the stage to accept his first Golden Globe award for best actor in a motion picture drama for his powerful portrayal of Elvis Presley in "Elvis," his speech was nothing out of the ordinary.

Like many other winners, Butler thanked his director, Baz Luhrmann, his colleagues and his family, dedicating the award to his late mother.

What did draw a lot of attention, however, was the accent in his voice.

Butler spoke in a deep tone and, apparently, with the same southern accent that he adopted to embody the "King of Rock and Roll."

On Twitter, several users wondered why Austin Butler kept "talking like Elvis."

For some, it shows his incredible talent, while others criticized him for his “fake accent” and asked him to leave it.

His intonation caused such a stir on social networks that at a press conference after receiving the award, a journalist asked him if he had realized that he still spoke like Elvis Presley.

Between nervous laughs, Butler responded that he didn't think he still sounds like the singer, though he admitted that Elvis will always live inside him.

“It's like someone who has lived in another country for a long time, and I had three years where that was my only focus in life, so I'm sure parts of my DNA will always be linked in that way,” Butler said. .

The 31-year-old actor described during an interview with

Variety

magazine how he gave himself entirely to this character.

“I didn't see my family for about three years (…) and there were months where I didn't talk to anyone, and when I did, I just thought about Elvis,” Butler revealed.

In an interview with CNN, "Elvis" director and producer Baz Luhrmann explained that casting the actor who would breathe new life into one of the biggest and most recognizable musical icons was a "life and death" decision for the film.

“That was crucial.

You have to hit that particular character or it doesn't matter, no cheat is going to cover that mistake,” said Luhrmann.

“I am very thorough and I saw other actors.

Each one brought something different, but Austin arrived as practically Elvis.

In fact, it took me a long time to realize that Austin wasn't actually from the South,” he added.

Butler was born in California.

Luhrmann said he recognized early on what an extraordinary talent Butler has.

“Even during the pandemic, instead of running home, Austin stayed and just threw himself completely into this character,” he said.

From his movements and mannerisms to his singing and speaking, Butler literally became the "King of Rock and Roll," and despite some criticism, that transformation continues to garner success for the actor.

In addition to winning the Golden Globe, Butler is one of the favorites to win the Oscar for best actor.

The Oscar winners will be announced on March 12.
