A Ukrainian soldier underwent successful surgery to remove an unexploded grenade, senior officials in Kyiv reported.
Surgeons removed the weapon lodged under the wounded soldier's heart, while two saboteurs ensured the procedure went safely, said Hana Maliar, Ukraine's deputy defense minister, who uploaded photos and X-rays of the grenade inside the soldier's chest.
"Military doctors performed an operation to remove a VOG grenade, which did not explode, from the soldier's body," she wrote in a Facebook post.
Anton Gershenko, a consultant to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, said that the team of saboteurs neutralized the grenade, adding that the operation "will be remembered in the medical books."

The operation was performed without the use of electrocoagulation - a common method to control bleeding during surgeries - because "the grenade could have exploded at any moment," Maliar wrote.
The wounded soldier was sent for rehabilitation and recovery.
Gershenko wrote in a post on Telegram that "Our doctors have never performed such an operation. Similar operations were performed during the war in Afghanistan. Regarding the current patient, I can say that he was born in 1994, he was sent to rehabilitation and his condition is stable. I think the case will go into the medical books."
