Customs and the mainland anti-smuggling department launched an anti-drug operation code-named "Cloud War-Stop 2023" to crack down on cross-border drug smuggling activities. On New Year's Day last week, a box of transformers weighing 62 kilograms that arrived in Hong Kong from Brazil were randomly checked at Chek Lap Kok Airport. About 9 kilograms of cocaine were sold, with a market value of about 8 million Hong Kong dollars.

After customs investigation, a man was arrested on suspicion of "trafficking dangerous drugs" after receiving the goods on Tuesday.

Customs also once arrested another 28-year-old man suspected to be related to the case, but he has been temporarily released.

Lin Jiaxin, inspector of the third group of air cargo of the Customs Airport Division, said that on New Year's Day, January 1, the customs conducted a spot check on a 62-kilogram transformer that came to Hong Kong from Brazil based on risk assessment and data analysis.

The X-ray machine showed 3 components inside, all with suspicious voids at the bottom.

The customs officer then disassembled it and found that the three components were covered by high-voltage copper wires, but the connections between the copper wires were only connected by adhesive tape or nylon cloth strips, which was quite rough and suspected of being modified.

The customs officer then disassembled the copper wires and found that the components were only welded with iron pillars, so they arranged for an independent X-ray inspection of the iron pillars, which revealed abnormal internal structures. They believed that they had been hollowed out to hide drugs. The criminals sealed the interior of the iron pillar with concrete to hide the drugs.

Customs eventually seized about 9 kilograms of cocaine inside the iron pillar, with an estimated market value of about HK$8 million.

The Customs Narcotics Investigation Bureau immediately started an intelligence exchange with the Mainland authorities, and identified the local male mastermind involved in the case. It is believed that he used remote control to use Mainland logistics companies to traffic the drugs involved in a circuitous route.

At 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday (10th), the transformer box was delivered to an independent house in Kowloon Tong. The 51-year-old male leader pushed it into the house after receiving the goods outside the house. When he stepped out again at 7:00 p.m. that night, the customs officer He rushed forward to intercept him, and then escorted him back to the house for search, where he seized dismantled transformers and cocaine.

The arrested man is an interior decoration worker of a detached house. It is believed that he dismantled the transformer and took out the drugs alone after other workers left work. He will be charged with one count of "trafficking in a dangerous drug".

During the investigation, the Customs arrested another 28-year-old man who was suspected to be related to the case and helped move the transformer involved in the case, but he has been temporarily released.

Customs will continue to trace the source and sale of drugs, etc., and it is not ruled out that more people will be arrested.
