(CNN) --
At least 5 people were killed and 13 others injured after a car sped at a busy intersection in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Wednesday night, state media reported.
The driver, a 22-year-old man from Guangdong province, was "contained" by police for investigation, local authorities said in a statement.
An eyewitness quoted in a China New Service report said a black BMW car plowed into pedestrians walking at an intersection near Zhengjia Plaza without stopping.
The plaza is in a busy upscale shopping district in the city of 19 million people.
A video circulating online and cited by state media appears to show the driver throwing handfuls of cash from his vehicle.
