According to the State Office for Statistics in Fürth, almost half of Bavarians are overweight.

This is particularly the case for one gender.

Munich – Thanks to the work of the statisticians, we Bavarians now have it in black and white: every second one of us is overweight.

In rural areas in particular, people are struggling with being overweight – and men are more common than women, as the microcensus has shown.

Bavaria: According to statistics, almost every second person is overweight

The State Office for Statistics in Fürth has ruthlessly processed the figures that they asked for in a survey of one percent of the population.

The average Bavarian is 1.79 meters tall and weighs 85.2 kilograms, the average Bavarian is 1.66 meters tall and weighs 68.2 kilograms.

For almost half of the population, however, the scale shows higher numbers.

If you are not sure whether you are overweight, you can rely on the body mass index.

This requires a bit of arithmetic work (see box).

If the result is a number over 25, you are overweight.

If the number is higher than 30, one speaks of obesity.

44 percent of men and 27 percent of women are overweight.

In Bavaria, 17 percent of men and 13 percent of women are obese.

Being underweight (BMI below 18) is rare, affecting only around two percent of the population.

According to the study, people in Bavaria are increasingly overweight in rural regions

It is noticeable that Bayern tend to struggle with weight in rural areas.

In urban areas people are often slimmer, the average BMW is 25.2 in the cities - in rural areas it is 26 or higher.

The people of Munich are particularly slim.

In the state capital, the average value is 24.7.

However, factors such as age can also play a role.

Statisticians have been observing the obesity trend for several years.

The health data was last collected in 2017, at that time the average BMI for Bavarians was 26.5 and for Bavarians 24.7.

Since 2005, the average BMI in Bavaria has increased by 0.4.

The body mass index

The BMI is an internationally recognized measure for assessing overweight and underweight.

It is calculated by taking your body weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared.

An example for a 1.80 meter tall person who weighs 75 kilos: 75 / 1.8 x 1.8 = 23.1.

Adults with a BMI below 18.5 are considered underweight.

A BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is considered obese.

Poll: Tell us your weight?

Stefan Plath (52), secretary from Olching:

I'm in the process of changing my weight.

In the new year I've already lost six kilos.

Before I weighed 95 kilos, this morning it was 89. I do a lot of sport, because I have a fitness station at home.

In addition, I always walk around the Theresienwiese or through the old town during my lunch break and avoid carbohydrates in the evening.

My ideal weight would be 80 kilograms.

My space

Ramona Jocher (20), entrepreneur from Prittriching:

I think I weigh 85 kilograms and am 1.75 meters tall.

I often go to the gym and do weight training there.

I started with 55 kilos, so I gained 30 kilos.

The weight is probably due to the muscles.

But I would find a few grams less fat quite good.

Getting down to 80 kilograms would be nice.

Christoph Stampfl (49), bookseller from Munich:

I don't even know what I weigh.

I quit 30 years ago and don't even own a scale.

I used to do it excessively, but it just stresses me out.

I don't think I weigh too much, but it might become too much at some point.

I estimate that I weigh around 85 to 95 kilos.

As long as the pants fit, I'm happy.

Anika Westner (23), entrepreneur from Peißenberg:

I've lost 25 kilograms and now weigh around 100, but I've also gained muscle mass.

I'm in the gym and attending workshops for a weight loss program.

I've been doing this since 2019 and I enjoy it.

I would like to lose even more weight.

Up to where, I don't know, because I always say that the mirror image should fit.
