Carole Cook, a legendary actress remembered for her appearances on stage and screen, died "peacefully" Wednesday of heart failure, her agent told CNN.

Carole Cook, a legendary actress remembered for her appearances on stage and screen, including the 1984 John Hughes comedy "Sixteen Candles," has died, her agent Robert Malcolm said in a statement.

She was 98 years old.

Cook passed away "peacefully" on Wednesday from heart failure, Malcolm told CNN via email.

In addition to her illustrious stage career, where she played the role of Maggie Jones in the 1980 Broadway musical "42nd Street," Cook had more than 60 screen credits.

He initially came under the wing of television legend Lucille Ball, whom he credits with giving him his big break.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Troupe.
