“Discriminatory, populist, wrong”: DIW boss Marcel Fratzscher was silent about Friedrich Merz on “Lanz”.

He now explains his point of view to IPPEN.MEDIA.

Hamburg/Munich – Friedrich Merz and the topic of migration: An apparently never-ending story.

In September, the CDU leader accused Ukraine refugees of “social tourism”.

And rowed back a little later.

The next scandal followed on Tuesday with "Markus Lanz".

In the debate about the Berlin New Year's Eve riots, Merz warned of "verbal violence", especially against female teachers in German classrooms, as one of the roots of the problem.

Not in general, but with a view to "people who actually have no business in Germany, who we have tolerated here for a long time, who we do not deport".

"Little Pashas", he called the children of this somewhat cloudy group.

A few sentences later, Merz became clearer.

"These are mainly young people from the Arab world who are not willing to follow the rules here in Germany, who enjoy challenging this state."

The TV images for this sequence also showed the face of fellow panelist Marcel Fratzscher.

The head of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) was silent in this passage of the program.

Fratzscher publicly regretted this in a tweet the next morning.

On request, he has now explained his point of view – and chosen clear words for Merz's statements.

Merz is rightly criticized, he emphasized.

Merz on "Lanz": Discussant Fratzscher warns - "populist" and harmful to the economy

"Such generalizations are not only populist and discriminatory," explained the economist

, "they also damage the German economy".

The problem does not end with the fact that "the statements are factually incorrect simply in their generalization".

Fratzscher focused on the labor shortage in Germany.

Statements like those of Merz lead to "Germany becoming unattractive as an immigration country," he warned.

"In this way, we are blocking the chance of attracting skilled workers and workers from abroad, which we urgently need." Do not exacerbate the crisis," he emphasized.

Fratzscher accused Merz of “blatant populism” in a tweet on Wednesday morning.

The CDU boss generalized "from a small minority, implicitly and explicitly, to all people with Arabic roots": "I am very angry that I remained silent about these statements," the DIW boss had confessed.

Merz criticized after "Lanz" appearance – teachers' association sees a "problem" in principle

There were also sharp reactions from federal politics to Merz' talk show appearance on ZDF on Wednesday.

"This comment fuels racist resentment and can also lead to stigmatization of entire groups," said the federal government's integration officer, Reem Alabali-Radovan (SPD).

However, she admitted that she had not seen the program, but had only read the statements.

Merz divides into "they" and "we," criticized the SPD interior expert Lars Castellucci in a tweet.

"We have the problems that we have in Germany because people with this mindset have ruled for too long."

Left board member Luigi Pantisano was even clearer in the short message service: "I'll make it short: Friedrich Merz is a racist!"

However, there were at least partly positive reactions.

There is a fundamental problem that female teachers in particular are not taken seriously and their authority is not recognized, said teacher association president Heinz-Peter Meidinger of the dpa.

At the same time, however, he emphasized that this should not be a "general suspicion or blanket accusation against all families with a corresponding migration background".

Primary school association colleague Edgar Bohn, on the other hand, criticized Merz's presentation as "very exaggerated and inaccurate".
