He is said to have stabbed his ex-partner, who was 33 years his junior, and her mother on the street - the 59-year-old mother died.
The local district court issued an arrest warrant against the man for murder, as the public prosecutor and the police announced on Thursday in Freiburg.
The man is said to have ambushed the two women on Wednesday morning in front of a house in the west of the city.
The 59-year-old died from the serious injuries.
The attacker's 30-year-old ex-girlfriend was so badly injured that she was initially unable to be heard.
As the investigators have now announced, she is no longer in mortal danger.
The alleged attacker, a German, had already "appeared under criminal law", the investigators said.
He has not yet made any statement about the fact.
After the bloody act, he fled in a car - the police arrested him in a parking lot on the A5 motorway in the area between Achern and Bühl.
The man had been in a relationship with the 30-year-old until recently.
In connection with the separation, according to the information, there were police operations – the man was forbidden to approach his ex-partner.
The police are now looking for witnesses to the crime.
It is the second homicide within a few days in the west of Freiburg.
Police say the cases are unrelated.
A 29-year-old man who is said to have shot his ex-girlfriend's partner was arrested on Saturday.
