The Augustiner Brauhaus on Heumarkt has white sausage and Helles on offer.

But Bavarian beer in 0.25 glasses?

Not everyone likes that.

Cologne – Since December 23, 2022 there has also been an Augustiner brewery in Cologne, it is the first in NRW, as 24RHEIN summarizes.

The Augustiner Bräu has moved into the former Maredo branch on Heumarkt.

And apparently with success: the brewery received numerous positive reviews in the first two weeks.

"Great shop and finally a real Bavarian in Cologne" writes a visitor in the Google reviews of the brewery.

The food is also “authentic”, just like in Bavaria.

But while the food and the beer receive a lot of praise, many Cologne residents are bothered by the size of the beer glass.

  • Augustiner Helles:

Augustiner opens in Cologne: But the size of the glasses causes criticism

Because in the Augustiner the beer is served in 0.25 liter glasses.

The size is well known in Cologne, but only at Kölsch.

For a Bavarian restaurant, that's not in style, many say.

In Bavaria, the "half" is actually standard (0.5 liters).

"I don't like the glasses," comments one visitor.

Another even speaks of prejudice: The brewery assumes that half a liter is too much for Cologne residents.

The price for a light "half half" (0.25 liters): 2.70 euros.

If you want a precious substance or a dark one, you pay another 40 cents more.

For comparison: A 0.2-liter Kölsch costs 1.90 euros in the Reissdorf brewery and 2.20 euros in the Gaffel am Dom brewery.

The Augustinian Brewery

Augustiner-Bräu is the oldest still existing brewery in Munich - it was founded in 1328. Augustiner-Bräu is also the brand name of the beers produced there.

The best-known bar is the Augustiner-Keller in Maxvorstadt in Munich.

If the "Augustiner" is mentioned, the "Large Beer Hell" is usually meant.

There are a total of eight different varieties, some of which are only available seasonally and/or only in the Munich area: Lager beer light, Edelstoff, Heller Bock, Weißbier, Pilsner, Oktoberfest beer, Maximator and Dunkel.

Lagerbier Hell is the best-selling variety.

Landlord Janis Leiro Nogueira explains the selection of the glasses to the

picture

: "Here in Cologne, people are used to the fact that the 0.2 glasses come to the table zack zack.

We wanted to keep that and it has been well received.

If you don't want that, you can order a half." Despite the high price, the quality doesn't seem to be lacking: "We stayed at Augustiner's in Munich for a long time and learned everything about the beer and how to tap it correctly," says the landlord continue.

The visitors notice that too: "Beer tastes just like in Munich and is very well tempered," writes one visitor.

In Cologne, especially in the old town, there are numerous breweries that are worth a visit.
